Over the past few years, the company has strengthened the area of training and development to improve the business performance. The company as a part of the HR strategy thus provides its employees with development programs including internal talent management, employee performance management, and leadership development for managers (Metaxas and Tsavdaridou 2013). The training strategies in this company emphasis on bridging the gap between the needs of customers and that of the organisation. The motive is to train the employees in a manner that does not hamper their creativity and in turn gain an advantage for the company (Faucher 2011). By providing on-the-job learning, coaching and feedback the company ensure that the employees have the necessary resources to learn (Isdell and Beasley 2011). However, coca cola also incorporates fun element in the training programs to make it a great place to work. The aim is to motivate and inspire the staff to become the best they can. The bank has sustainably invested in the training and educational programs for their employees over the past years by establishing a Training Centre in 1996 (Koutsogeorgopoulou et al. 2014). Belias et al. (2013) conducted survey and interview at the headquarters in Athens with the managers of the bank. As per the survey, the training approach used in the bank is "on-the-job training for both middle and lower level managers. This type of training is mainly used for the positions on the lower level due to frequent job rotations, and for middle-level managers, it depends on the need of an hour. On the job training in NBG includes basic training, commercial training, banking operations, financial training, administration training, and other computer courses (Maes 2015). The employees at this level are well trained on the usage of the electronic data processing system. The training is to educate the employees on how to provide the customer services and deal with their issues. This program forms the basis of the successful attainment of organisation's aims and also aid in penetrating the foreign market (Koutsogeorgopoulou et al. 2014). Regular feedback is taken from the trainees and the trainers to measure the success of the training approach (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). Since both trainer and trainee are in contact, it is easy to avoid many mistakes and resolve the misunderstandings. This helps to proceed in the valuable and efficient training. Learning foreign languages mainly English also helps the workers to better interact with the international clients (Glaveli and Karassavidou 2011). According to Belias et al. (2013), NBG provides training to its employees in the branches abroad according to the Greek standards. The local personnel in abroad are trained in both house and the seminars. The international managers are skilled enough, have precondition skills, and are not provided with intense training. To increase participation from staff, the bank is offering certified courses alon g with financial support for gaining international professional certifications programs. These activities have increased business performance, staff morale and business profit. Though both companies have some aim behind training and development, the process of training has minute differences. The difference in training is due to a difference in business operations of both companies. Coca Cola being a beverage industry provides training in the area of customer services related to taste enhancement, quality of food and innovation in the food and drink products, timely delivery of food products (Phillips 2012). On the contrary, NBG being a banking sector provides training and development related to banking operations, IT, issues, management skills, computerised processes, and financial expertise. Coca Cola provides training and development programs, coaching, feedback, E-learning and role-plays required for its staff to develop their profession and career. However, Coca Cola company does not have a training centre or academy like NBG. It does not provide extensive training like NBG. NBG provides training to people other than the employees, but Coca Cola mainly focuses on the development of its existing staff (Isdell and Beasley 2011). NBG does not provide training and development programs to the senior level managers and the internal managers as it recruits high skilled professionals. On the other hand, Coca Cola provides training to the staff at all levels equally. Since both the organisations are well reputed, the process of training is same. Both companies implement on the job training and the of the job training. However, Coca Cola mainly focuses on the on the job training. Unlike NBG, Coca Cola does not provide certified courses for its trainees. Therefore, it can be said that NBG has the higher level of training infrastructure compared to Coca Cola (Belias et al. 2013). Unlike NBG, Coca Cola does not provide education to its employees in the foreign languages. Coca Cola implements the role play approach to training, but NBG does not. Irrespective of the mode of training both the companies provides its employees with the room for growth. However, the management and development activities are stronger in NBG when compared to Coca Cola. NBG keeps its employees busy with goals insight, but the same is not seen in Coca Cola (Phillips 2012). The system of job rotation in banks increases the need of training activities, but beverage companies do not have job rotation system. The difference in training activities between both companies and the need of intense training in banking field is due to higher job security compared to that in Coca Cola (Beier and Kanfer 2010). This justifies the huge training infrastructure in NBG when compared to Coca Cola. On the contrary, the employees in Coca Cola are slightly vulnerable to market forces. Due to fluctuating market conditions, they are vulnerable to the wage levels. Employees in Coca Cola work hard to be competitive in skills and deliver high quality service to avoid being rep laced. However, the frequency of replacing employees in NBG is less although it is mandatory for the employees to meet the performance standards. Job burnout, stress and demotivation are observed in the employees of Coca Cola but not among the employees in NBG. Overall the training and development as a part of the leadership and management in NBG are regular while in Coca Cola the training and development are sometimes based on the need of the specific group of a workforce. It is these human resource management practices that led to the high reputation of both organisations (Phillips 2012). Discussion The training approach in both Coca Cola and NBG is developed with the perspective of the organisation, its objectives and the current challenges. Training and development programs must be developed in the organisation in a way that not only satisfies the employees but also become highly productive (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). These programs increase the technical abilities, work motivation, job confidence, interpersonal skills of the employees and teamwork of the employees (Tahir et al., 2014). Adaptation to Audience: Many audience members either have tattoos or have considered getting a tattoo, but what they arenââ¬â¢t aware of is the process of getting a tattoo removed.I will be using pictures as well as information from the dermatologist I work with to educate the audience of what they can expect from the tattoo removal process. Opening Strategy (hook): Informative Key Word Outline: Laser Tattoo Removal Introduction Hook:It may have seemed like a good idea initially, but years, months or even maybe only a few hours later the regret is settling in and you are asking yourself ââ¬Å"what was I thinking, getting a tattoo? â⬠Maybe itââ¬â¢s he placement you are unhappy with, or possible the color or image, whatever it may be causing you to rethink your ââ¬Å"brilliantâ⬠idea, you arenââ¬â¢t alone. According to WebMD it is estimated that close to 10% of the U. S. population has some sort of tattoo, and eventually as many as 50% of them want it removed. Lucky for that 50% of people, with the new laser tattoo removal techniques, doctors are able to help people of all ages rid themselves of something that the y no longer want on their bodies. I will now explain the history, process and side effects and results of laser tattoo removal.Thesis: Most of us know the process of getting a tattoo, but what we arenââ¬â¢t as familiar with is the process of getting a tattoo removed. Body: I.Dr. Mark Taylor says that tattoo removal dates back to ancient Egyptian times; however in modern society, up until the last decade, tattoo removal was often painful and left unsightly scarring. A. The following tattoo removal processes took place before laser tattoo removal came around. 1. Cutting o ut the skin containing the tattoo ink- which sometimes is still done if the tattoo can not be treated with the laser. 2. Dermabrasion Salabrasion- sanding/sanding salting of the skin- Historically this is the most common way to remove a tattoo.The idea being to traumatize the skin and then applying irritants to draw out the tattoo ink. A rapidly spinning diamond fraise wheel or a wire brush 3. Laser vaporization-burning out the skin 4. Chemical peels B. Side affects of tattoo removal without a laser 1. Dermabrasion has a high risk of scarring and loss of normal skin pigment- Severely painful 2. Risk of infection 3. All methods are very painful Transition: Now letââ¬â¢s explore laser tattoo removal. Laser tattoo removal was initially performed with continuous wave length when it was first released on the market.It was then switched to a Q-Switched Laser (what is currently used), which became available in the 90ââ¬â¢s. II. How does the laser actually remove tattoos A. The web site howstuffworks. com summarizes how the laser tattoo removal process works in simple terms. The article describes that the laser works by producing short pulses of intense light that pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment. 1. Laser Energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles 2.The particles are later cleaned up by the bodyââ¬â¢s natural immune process 3. Only pigment from the tattoo is targeted with the laser- The skin surrounding the tattoo is unharmed 4. On average, most tattoos can be removed in 5-15 clinic visits B. Although itââ¬â¢s called tattoo removal, completely removing a tattoo can be difficult. If youââ¬â¢ve placed that sweet verse of poetry on your neck or chest in black or red ink, youââ¬â¢re in luck. But the itty-bitty tweedy-bird tattoo on your foot or wrist in certain shades of green, purple or blue will be much more stubborn. . Varies with the type of tattoo, the col or of the ink, the density of the pigment, the size and depth of the tattoo, and the bodyââ¬â¢s reaction to the treatment. 2. Black ink is typically the easiest color to treat. Multi-colored tattoos, especially those with yellow and other unusual colors may be difficult to completely remove 3. Tattoos closer to the heart with increased blood supply, respond more quickly to treatment 4. If you are on the fence about saying so long to your ex-wives name on your shoulder blade, it may benefit you to wait a little longer.According to dermatologist Dr. Will Kirby and also guest star on LA Ink says, older tattooââ¬â¢s are easier to remove than brand-new ones. ââ¬Å"Some people get a tattoo at 10 in the morning and they want it removed by 11, but youââ¬â¢ve got to wait at least six weeks before your first laser treatment. â⬠Transition: Now that we are familiar with how laser tattoo removal works, letââ¬â¢s discuss the million dollar question, ââ¬Å"does it hurtâ⬠, as well as the pos-treatment considerations. III. Does laser tattoo removal hurt? A. According to Dr. Mark Taylor, the impact of the energy from the laserââ¬â¢s owerful pulse of light has been described as similar to getting hot specks of bacon greased on your skin or being snapped by a thin rubber band. The rapid pulses generated from the laser may feel different to each patient. ââ¬Å"The unfortunate thing about tattoos is that both getting them and having them taken off can be uncomfortable. â⬠B. To further decrease the pain, the physicians recommend one of the following options: 1. Topical anesthetic cream applied to the area an hour before treatment 2. Local anesthetic injected into the tattoo prior to treatmentC. What happens after laser removal is performed 1. Immediately following treatment, the tattoo will have a whitish appearance, develop some swelling, blistering, and may have pinpoint bleeding 2. Antibiotic ointment and a bandage are applied 3. The treated are a will take about two weeks to heal and will begin to fade 4. You can look forward getting the painful procedure done again in 4-8 weeks D. Typically the only real side effectââ¬â¢s to laser tattoo removal is incomplete removal of the tattoo as well as the high expense of the treatment Conclusion:You may now be asking yourself is getting a tattoo worth the money and hassle? Itââ¬â¢s really up to you. Some people really enjoy their tattoos and keep them for life, whereas others might regret that they acted on impulse and didnââ¬â¢t think enough about it before they got one. "Now he was a sturdy, straw haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner." (1.19) 1899 Daisy Fay is born in Louisville, Kentucky. (We know this because she is 18 when she meets Gatsby in Louisville in 1917.) ââ¬Å"Our white girlhood was passed together there. Our beautiful whiteâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (1.140) 1901 Jordan Baker is born in Louisville, Kentucky. (We know this because she says that Daisy is two years older.) "The largest of the banners and the largest of the lawns belonged to Daisy Fay's house. She was just eighteen, two years older than me, and by far the most popular of all the young girls in Louisville." (4.130) 1902 Dan Cody, Gatsby's mentor, buys his yacht the Tuolomee and starts sailing. He does this to get away from Ella Kaye, his estranged second wife. "The none too savory ramifications by which Ella Kaye, the newspaper woman, played Madame de Maintenon to his weakness and sent him to sea in a yacht, were common knowledge to the turgid journalism of 1902." (6.11) 1906 James Gatz works as a clam digger and salmon fisher on Lake Superior, and tries to go to St. Olaf Lutheran College in southern Minnesota before dropping outtwo weeks later unhappy to be working as a janitor to support himself. "For over a year he had been beating his way along the south shore of Lake Superior as a clam digger and a salmon fisher ... An instinct toward his future glory had led him, some months before, to the small Lutheran college of St. Olaf in southern Minnesota. He stayed there two weeks ... despising the janitor's work with which he was to pay his way through. Then he drifted back to Lake Superior" (6.8-10) 1907 James Gatz, 17 years old, meets Dan Cody in Little Girl Bay on Lake Superior and changes his name to Jay Gatsby. "James Gatz- that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career- when he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior ... I knew right away I made a mistake.â⬠(2.112-116) 1911 Myrtle and George Wilson move into the apartment above the garage in the valley of ashes. "They've been living over that garage for eleven years. And Tom's the first sweetie she ever had." (2.117) Nick Carraway and Tom Buchanan go to Yale University. (We know this because they graduate in 1915.) 1912 Dan Cody dies in Boston. Heleaves $25,000 to Gatsby, but Ella Kaye uses legal means to take away this inheritance. Gatsby is penniless but has learned polished manners and how the rich operate. 1914 World War I begins. 1915 Nick Carraway graduates from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and goes to fight in WWI. "I graduated from New Haven in 1915, just a quarter of a century after my father, and a little later I participated in that delayed Teutonic migration known as the Great War." (1.6) Tom Buchanan also graduates from Yale University. ââ¬Å"one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven- a national figure in a way, one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors of anti-climax. â⬠¦ there were men at New Haven who had hated his gutsâ⬠(1.16-20) October 1917 Gatsby is stationed at Camp Taylor in Louisville, where hemeets Daisy Fay (he is 27, she is 18). They are together for a month, and he is shocked by how much in love with her he falls. ââ¬Å"He knew that Daisy was extraordinary ... He felt married to her, that was all.â⬠(8.13) Jordan also meets Gatsby. "One October day in nineteen-seventeen-(said Jordan Baker that afternoon, sitting up very straight on a straight chair in the tea-garden at the Plaza Hotel) - I was walking ... to Daisy Fay's house ... she was sitting in it with a lieutenant I had never seen before ... The officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking, in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at sometime, and because it seemed romantic to me I have remembered the incident ever since. His name was Jay Gatsby" (4.129-133) Winter 1917-1918 Gatsby leaves for Europe to fight in WWI. Wild rumors were circulating about her- how her mother had found her packing her bag one winter night to go to New York and say goodbye to a soldier who was going overseas. (4.134) 1918 Jordan becomes a professional golfer. She is later mired in a cheating scandal, but nothing is proven. "That was nineteen-seventeen. By the next year I had a few beaux myself, and I began to play in tournaments" (4.134) September 1918 Gatsby fights with distinction in the Argonne Battle, and thenis promoted to Captain and then to Major. He also receives several medals. "He did extraordinarily well in the war. He was a captain before he went to the front and following the Argonne battles he got his majority and the command of the divisional machine guns." (8.17) 1919 After Armistice, Gatsby spends fivemonths at Oxford University in England, in a program for army officers. "It was in nineteen-nineteen, I only stayed five months. That's why I can't really call myself an Oxford man ... It was an opportunity they gave to some of the officers after the Armistice," he continued. "We could go to any of the universities in England or France."" (7.218-220) June 1919 Despite some reluctance, Daisy marries Tom Buchanan. ââ¬Å"ââ¬Å"Tell 'em all Daisy's change' her mine. Say 'Daisy's change' her mine!'." She began to cry- she cried and criedâ⬠¦Next day at five o'clock she married Tom Buchanan without so much as a shiverâ⬠(4.140-142) August 1919 Tom Buchanan has an affair with a chambermaid during the honeymoon. "That was in August ... Tom ran into a wagon on the Ventura road one night ... The girl who was with him ... was one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel." (4.143) October 1919 Meyer Wolfshiem fixes the 1919 World Series. ââ¬Å"The idea staggered me â⬠¦ if I had thought of it at all I would have thought of it as a thing that merely happened, the end of some inevitable chain. It never occurred to me that one man could start to play with the faith of fifty million peopleâ⬠(4.115) November 1919 Gatsby returns to Louisville while Daisy and Tom are on their multi-month honeymoon. ââ¬Å"He stayed there a week, walking the streets where their footsteps had clicked together â⬠¦ He stretched out his hand desperately as if to snatch only a wisp of air, to save a fragment of the spot that she had made lovely for him. But it was all going by too fast now for his blurred eyes and he knew that he had lost that part of it, the freshest and the best, forever.â⬠(8.28-30) Gatsby goes to New York and asks his future partner, Meyer Wolfsheim, for a job. Prohibition spurswidespreadunderground organized crime (represented by Meyer Wolfshiem and Gatsby in the novel). April 1920 Daisy gives birth to Pammy, and the Buchanans move to France. "The next April Daisy had her little girl and they went to France for a year. I saw them one spring in Cannes and later in and then they came back to Chicago to settle down." (4.144) 1921 The Buchanans move to Chicago, where Nick visits them for 2 days, then to East Egg on Long Island, New York. Spring 1922 Tom starts an affair with Myrtle Wilson. ââ¬Å"When we came into the station he was next to me and his white shirt-front pressed against my arm- and so I told him I'd have to call a policeman, but he knew I lied. I was so excited that when I got into a taxi with him I didn't hardly know I wasn't getting into a subway train.â⬠(2.120) June 1922 Nick decides to learn bond trading in New York. He rents a small house in West Egg, Long Island, next door to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s mansion. Nick has lunch with the Buchanans (Daisy is his cousin), and meets Jordan Baker. Nick has a brief relationship with a woman from Jersey City. "I even had a short affair with a girl who lived in Jersey City and worked in the accounting department, but her brother began throwing mean looks in my direction so when she went on her vacation in July I let it blow quietly away." (3.155) July 2, 1922 Tom takes Nick to meet Myrtle. They go to a Manhattan apartment, to a small party that ends with Tom punching Myrtle in the face for talking about Daisy. (We know the exact date because Nick notes that it was two days before the 4th of July holiday.) July 1922 Nick is invited to one of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s house parties and meets him. Also at the party is Owl-Eyes, the guest who enthuses about Gatsbyââ¬â¢s library. ââ¬Å"People were not invited- they went there. â⬠¦ they conducted themselves according to the rules of behavior associated with amusement parks. Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at allâ⬠(3.7) Nick starts a relationship with Jordan Baker. Gatsby takes Nick out to lunch, where Nick meets Meyer Wolfshiem, and where Gatsby meets Tom. Jordan tells Nick that Gatsby and Daisy had been in love five years before. Nick invites Daisy over for tea so that Gatsby can ââ¬Å"drop byâ⬠and he and Daisy reconnect. August 1922 A reporter comes by to investigate the rumors about Gatsby. "It was a random shot, and yet the reporter's instinct was right. Gatsby's notoriety, spread about by the hundreds who had accepted his hospitality and so become authorities on his past, had increased all summer until he fell just short of being news. " (6.5) Tom Buchanan meets Gatsby when Tom stops by Gatsbyââ¬â¢s in the middle of a horseback ride. "I went over to his house one Sunday afternoon. I hadn't been there two minutes when somebody brought Tom Buchanan in for a drink ... Tom and a man named Sloane and a pretty woman in a brown riding habit" (6.17-18) Tom and Daisy come to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s next party, which Daisy hates. Gatsby and Daisy begin their affair; Gatsby fires his staff and stops his parties. "I hear you fired all your servants." "I wanted somebody who wouldn't gossip. Daisy comes over quite often- in the afternoons." So the whole caravansary had fallen in like a card house at the disapproval in her eyes." (7.13-15) Daisy invites Nick and Gatsby for lunch at her house. She and Gatsby plan to reveal their love to Tom, but instead in the unbearably hot day, the group decides to go to Manhattan to the Plaza Hotel. There, Gatsby reveals the affair, and Tom reveals that Gatsbyââ¬â¢s money comes from crime. Daisy is unwilling to completely renounce Tom, which decimates Gatsby. Daisy decides to stay with Tom. ""Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby. "I love you now- isn't that enough? I can't help what's past." She began to sob helplessly. "I did love him once- but I loved you too." Gatsby's eyes opened and closed. "You loved me too?" he repeated." (7.264-266) On the way back from the hotel, Daisy, driving Gatsbyââ¬â¢s car, runs over and kills Myrtle Wilson. That night, Tom convinces George Wilson that it was actually Gatsby who killed Myrtle. Also that night, Gatsby decides that he will take the blame for Myrtleââ¬â¢s death, and Nick and Jordan break up. The next day, Tom and Daisy skip town for good. Later that day, Wilson shoots and kills Gatsby and then himself. September 1922 The murder-suicide is mischaracterized as the actions of a deranged grieving husband, and there is no mention of the Buchanans or of Myrtleââ¬â¢s affair in the police report. Gatsbyââ¬â¢s father, Henry Gatz comes to the funeral from Minnesota. ââ¬Å"a solemn old man very helpless and dismayed, bundled up in a long cheap ulster against the warm September day. His eyes leaked continuously with excitementâ⬠(9.33) Nick canââ¬â¢t find anyone else to come to the funeral. Even Wolfshiem refuses to come. ââ¬Å"Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is deadâ⬠(9.99) Owl-eyes is the only other person who comes to the funeral. October 1922 Nick hashes things out with Jordan. Nick runs into Tom in Manhattan, where Tom confesses to telling Wilson that Gatsby was driving the car that killed Myrtle. November 1922 Completely disillusioned and horrified, Nick moves back home to the Midwest. ââ¬Å"West Egg especially still figures in my more fantastic dreams. I see it as a night scene by El Greco: a hundred houses, at once conventional and grotesque, crouching under a sullen, overhanging sky and a lustreless moon.â⬠(9.126) 1924 Nick writes the storyabout Gatsby and that fateful summer - this story is the novel that we are reading. ââ¬Å"After two years I remember the rest of that day, and that night and the next day, only as an endless drill of police and photographers and newspaper men in and out of Gatsby's front door. ... When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn.â⬠(9.1-4) The whole novel is basically Nick's furious journaling about his formative summer. Individual Character Timelines If you're writing a character analysis, or comparing two characters to each other, it may help to have those characters' biographies separate from the novel as a whole. In 1907, after a year of clam digging and fishing and two weeks at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, James Gatz changes his name to Jay Gatsby and meets Dan Cody. Gatsby sails with Dan Cody from 1907 to 1912, when he loses the inheritance Cody wanted to leave him to Cody's wife. In October 1917, Daisy and Gatsby meet in Louisville and date for a month, before Gatsby ships out to fight in WWI. Gatsby fights with distinction, is promoted to Major, and gets several medals. Nick invites Daisy over for tea so that Gatsby can ââ¬Å"drop byâ⬠and he and Daisy reconnect. Nick breaks up with Jordan when she is completely unmoved by Myrtle's death. Nick ends up being in charge of Gatsby's funeral and can't find anyone to come. Completely disillusioned and horrified, Nick moves back home to the Midwest.
